No it doesn't matter if a 16-year-old-girl wrote the story because the author could of done some reasearch before she wrote the story. Se couldn't also heard of people's experiences being involved with gangs. She also could of grown up living around gangs (she didn't have to join one). The story could easily be true because two different kinds of people don't have to be alike. Everyone has there own ways of life and life-styles.
In conclusion, anyone could of written this story if they knew what they were talking about, how the gang way of life is, and any other facts need be.

No. I don't think it has to be a 16 year old girl who has experinced gang life. I think it could it be any girl who likes the drama between gangs. I think she could start the book and write it over a period of time. However, I don't think the the book would have been realistic as a book coming from an author who had real experiences with gangs.
I'm going to say it depends. If your not in a gang before hand how do you know what gangs do, just by reading in a article? They do other things that we do not know about that doesn't get publish in the news.
I could see she might have done some reasearch like Mike said. She had probably a group of friends that were sort of like a gang of friends. She might have known a gang member.
It really depends on the circumstances.
I don't think it makes the story that much less true. I bet some of the characters would be more like Dally in a real gang. She did a good job and I think she describe a lot of stuff on what a gangs life would have been.

PS: That was a hard question with the only two people in front of me taking some good stuff. But oh well, I like challenges.
I think that if she had been in a gang, she would have been busy with them , instead of actually writing this book. This is like: E.B. White may not have grown up on a farm with a pig, but he wrote Charlotte's Web anyway. If these people were growing up like thier stories, why would they take the time to write them down?
I don't think that it matters that a 16-year-old girl wrote the story. Just because she's 16 doesn't mean she hasn't been exposed to this kind of thing (even though she had never been in a gang). It also doesn't matter that she's a girl. There were girl Greasers and girl Socs, and there are girls in gangs. Just because she's a girl and hasn't been in a gang herself doesn't mean that she didn't have friends in a gang. She could also just have a good imagination, and have read a lot of books about gangs and gotten some ideas from there. I don't think that this made it less true at all.

No it doesent matter because sometimies the youngest people write the best books and she could have had experience with a gang without ever being in one and no it doesent make the book less thouthfull.
No, it does not matter that a 16 year old girl wrote The Outsiders. She might have grew up in a town where there was a lot of gangs. She could have had problems with gangs in the school that she went to when she wrote The Outsiders. Her parents might have been in a gang when they were young and told her about their experiences to help her write the book. It would make the story more realistic if she had been in a gang, but she did a great job. You would think she was in a gang if you knew nothing about her.
I don't think it really does matter if she was in a gang or not. As Mike said, she could have done lots of research about gagns before writing the story. She could have also known people who were in gangs. If non of that is true, then it obviously it does make the story less true. but if that were true, why would she even bother writing a story about gangs? I'm sure she already new alot about gangs before writing the story.
Asuming that she did, I don't think it necessrly makes the story less true. It also doesn't matter that she is sixteen or not.
I don't think it matters how old you are to be able to wright a good story.
-Davey
no. She might have not only lived arounded gangs but lost a loved one becuse of gangs while still not being in one. This might have tramaticly affected her life at a young age and urged her to write a book exploiting both(mosltly the greasers) sides of the fights. She most likely felt that there was and still is no reason for the large amount of gang violence that there is in the world, and wanted to express what she believed. Now this is just one senareo their are many other ways that at a young age she was exposed tog gangs and the violence that they cause, without ever being in one.
No, I don't think that it matters that a 16-year-old girl who has never been in a gang wrote this book. She could have learnt about gangs from a friend or read about then or maybe she grew up in an area that had gangs. She did a really good job writing this book and if I hadn't known that she was not in a gang then I would have thought that she was part of one. I don't think that because she was not in a gang makes the story less true. Most writers write novels that have to do with something that they have never experienced.

No, it doesn't really matter if a sixteen year old girl wrote this story. I agree with Mike because she could have done some research about gangs. Maybe her best friend was in a gang or a brother. I agree with Emma that she could have had a Wonderful imagination. Like what Maddie said most writers have not experienced these dilemas in their own life.
This mattter does not make it less true. Why? Well because if she did some research before, she could take events that happend in real life gangs and combined them into the story.
I don't think that it matters that the author was a 16 year old girl. I could write a book on adulthood, if I put my mind to it. Also, Even if she wasn't in a gang, it doesn't really matter. Almost everyone knows that gangs have rivalries, and that they sometimes fight for kicks.
Plus, the theme could be related to her life somewhat. Maybe she was a girl whose grandparents died. She knows, obviously, what it feels like. Maybe two of her freinds died too. Sometimes you need to think of a related thing that the author could have gone through, like her group of friends doesn't like this other group of people that thinks that they are better than her and her group.
Oh, Ian, you forgot.
-Earl Marple <-- that is strictly for Ian L. I am not using it.
also, in addition to my previos comment, Christopher Paolini wrote ERAGON, which is a LONG book about elves and dwarves and men fighting against an evil king and his dragon, when Eragon finds an egg and becomes a rider.
--If dragons don't exist, then how could Christopher write about someone who rides dragons?
--Me. Who else?
No, it doesn't matter that a 16-year-old wrote the Outsider book. Because there could have been gangs around her area, and she could of also used what she knows about gangs of any kind.
Sorry, I pressed Enter by accident I'm not done.
This matter does not make it less true, because she might of had a friend of a friend which was a gang member, and asked that person what their life is like. For example I don't have any siblings but my friends have talked about them to me before. So from that I could write something about having a sibling.
Now I'm done, THANK YOU!
I do not think it matters that a 16 year-old girl wrote the book at all. In addition I agree with Shelby. Authors need not experience what they write. Otherwise there would be no such thing as an author. they could only write 1 or 2 stories.
-Iain Phillips
psh, Not at all. just because a girl wrote this book does not make it any more true. That is like saying a man writing about the romans, has he ever been there when to roman empire was rising? no he was not. And being 16 is better because a 16 year old would know more about this stuff then a 40 year old. and girls are in gangs you no. and it could not be less true because anything could happen in any differen gangs. So, i would have to say no to that one
-Alex T.
I do not think that it matters that a sixteen year old girl wrote this book. It does not make it less true, because she may know more about a gang than someone in the gang itself does! I read the interview in the back of the book and it said the S.E. Hinton grew up around gangs and some of her best friends were in thier own gangs. Hinton may have seen much of the things that occured and heard anout other things, because she lived around gangs. If an author knew the backgroud of a certain thing, such as a gang, he or she can write about it, and be sure that it is acurate if they have something to back up their statements. Anyways, who says a book can not have some imagination and creativity????
The fact that she is a 16-year-old girl doesn't mean the story can't be well written, historically correct, have emotions and have ideas that gang members might have felt. Although the book might be more realistic if someone went through the stuff that happened to Ponyboy, they would have to be able to put it all down on paper and spend the time publishing it, which probably wouldn't happen. She obviously didn't go writing about a topic that she didn't know, because of the book you can tell that she had researched and/or experienced something that triggered the idea. It is also evident that she put a lot of time and effort into it. The book is as true as is would be if someone else wrote the exact same thing and had been in a gang and were a 42-year-old man. I don't think the book is any different because of the author.
Well no not really, because most 16 years olds join gangs and have to do with all the violence.Maybe she was in a gang, and like most people said the younger authors are the better the book gets.Because when you grow up you lose some of your imagination.Ponyboy started out writing a few paragraphs but then it turned out that he wrote a very good book.
NO i dont think it matters that a 16 year old girl wrote a story about a gang and she wasnt in one.She could of had some friends that were in a gang and wrote the book from her experiences or heard some stories and put them all together and wrote a story. she could hvae been living in a city near gangs, or maybe how she thought it was like.
No, i don't think that it matters that a 16 year-old-girl wrote it because, even though she is not in a gang other people that she could know could be in a gang. Also, she is a girl and just because she is one doesn't mean that she has never seen this going on. She could also just have seen things like this in television shows, and magazines. It could also be that she was going to join a gang and she wrote down what she thinks is going to happen. I still think no, but there are many different ways to explain it.
No i don't think it has to be 16 years old girl with exprience of gangs or gang life. As anoymous? said anybody can make book best-seller without any exprience. Or there might have been gangs around she's town or house.
No, I don't think it's matter she had a gang experience or not. What gangs do is not specific. So what gang does can make up by anyones.
The thing I really wonder is this story is written by 16 years old. The book was really amazing that I cannot imagine it is written by 16 years old girl.
No it doesn't matter that whoever wrote this. Because the fiction is made of an author's imagination.
And the author can use her/his basic knowledge too. For example, I can write about an adult's life, because I know some from my parents.
Downy Lee
no i dont think it does
because she could have seen people around her and get information about and also
she could have asked people who involved in gangs.(some kind of surveys) To some people, it could make it less true, because the book is awesome!!! they can say like, "wow, how amazing that 16-year-old girl wrote this book!"
no i dont think it matters if a 16 year old girl wrote this book. It does not make the book less true. If you had an experience with the matter you could write the book. You could read about the topic or watch something on T.V to know what you are talking about for the book.
Mo, it doesn't matter what the age of the person who wrote it. It was good to get the story in a point of view from someone around the ages of the characters in the story. The story would be different if a 40-year-old man wrote it. The author knew what was going on when she wrote the book and her story could happen. She knew what happened in gangs and she wrote it down everyone could know. The Outsiders is a very good book regardless of the age of the author.
No, I don't think it matters much whether or not S.E. Hinton was 16, was a girl, or had some gang experience. I agree with Maureen - the book could have been written by anyone who did a little research and was drawn to the drama that unfolds in the conflict between gangs. In my opinion, the story would only differ slightly if the author had been from another age group, because teens may know what hooks other teens slightly better than other age groups.
I do not think it matters if a 16-year-old girl wrote The Outsiders.
She could have had a friend that was in a gang or a person who was in a gang that talked to her about gangs. It might have depended on where she lived. If she lived in a neighborhood where there were gangs and observed or took notes on them she could have writen the book as easy as pie
